In addition to these great books, we also take a moment during our Sex Criminals segment to go over a few bits from Fraction & Zdarsky's Just the Tips, we cover some great news, and go over a couple of great books in our Top of the Stack segment. This week we spotlight Image Comics' Bitch Planet by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine De Landro and Valiant's Quantum and Woody by Jasmes Asmus and Tom Fowler.

40: Nailbiter #8; Chew #45

This week, Under the Comic Covers discuss the latest issue of Joshua Williamson and Mike Henderson's always creepy and entertaining Nailbiter and John Layman and Rob Guillory's tragically delicious final issue of Chew's Chicken Tenders arc.

Along the way we cover some strange and often tangential topics. In our news segment there are name changes and assault charges, we take a brief look into Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky's Just the Tips, a sexual manual for those so inclined (those being fictional people with more than a few mental issues), a patriotic tribute to one of the comic worlds greatest fallen hero, and in our Top of the Stack segment we (meaning Mr. Blahg) talk at great length about the entire Planet of the Apes franchise as Grace picks Michael Moreci and Dan McDade's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes comic from BOOM Comics, and Mr. Blahg makes a very sober selection with Robbie Morrison and Charlie Adlard's White Death from Image Comics.

And of course... as always... we answer your emails and blather on for ages about a whole lot of nothing... but dag nabbit, we do hope you find it to be entertaining.

37: The Walking Dead #134; Copperhead #1-3

What? The Walking Dead?? Squeeeeee!!!! Yes, this week, Under the Comic Covers covers the world's most popular zombie show... however, we talk about that weird picture book version of that story by Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead #134: From Whispers to Screams.

We also go over a new addition to the UtCC stable of titles; Copperhead, by Jay Faerber and Scott Godlewski. Described as Deadwood in space, Copperhead lives up to that description with a fantastic first three issues and a pairing of main characters that will win you over in a heartbeat.

Per usual, we answer your emails and take a peek at the Tops of our Stacks with an Image First, Drifter, by Ivan Brandon and Nic Klein; as well as give an advance review of Graveyard Shift, by Jay Faerber (Copperhead) and Fran Bueno. Some seriously good stuff crammed into this particular pie hole.

36: Nailbiter #7; Chew #44

This week, Under the Comic Covers dissects two of the more gruesome titles we cover. We begin our meal with Nailbiter #7... a wonderful appetizer with frights, a special guest star, and a pinch of humor to whet your appetite. The main course consists of tortillas, chocolate, and pent-up aggression mixed with fierce fighting skills in this months penultimate issue of Chew: Chicken Tenders... Issue #44.

As is our wont, we answer our fantabulous listener's emails, listen to a voicemail froma familar voice, get a mighty heap of news, and we can't forget the Top of the Stack. This week we discuss Tooth & Claw #1, the latest Image first by Busiek and Dewey... as well as Snapshot, by Andy Diggle and Jock.

As usual, we answer our beloved listener's emails, get a hearty dose of news, including a voicemail from the owner of Comix Experience in San Francisco regarding the upcoming Brian K. Vaughan book singing in San Francisco, and a special Top of the Stack segment where we both discuss a new Image title, Roche Limit by Michael Moreci and Vic Malhotra.

In addition to this, we answer your emails and reach for what we have on the Top of the Stack. This week, Grace picks Stumptown, while Mr. B goes with something a bit more out of character... G.I. Joe: Cobra. Seriously...

33: Manifest Destiny #11

This week, Under the Comic Covers covers... not three!... not two!!... but one whole issue!!! Fortunately, it happens to be one of all all-time favorite titles, Chris Dingess' and Matthew Roberts' fantastic revisioning of Lewis and Clark's expedition into the wilds of an untamed America, Manifest Destiny.

In one of the best issues of the current arc thus far, Lewis manages one of the best spur of the moment heroic moments, and we manage to talk around that fact with our usual aplomb.

In addition to this title, we cover some weekly news, including a great "man on the street" report from Kirk Manley (http://www.studiokm.com/) with regard to NYCC, and we top it all off with Top of the Stack, our new weekly segment covering new and otherwise interesting reads not covered in our usual lineup of books.

32: Black Science #9; Sex Criminals #8

This week Under the Cover Comics goes over the fine points of Black Science #9 and Sex Criminals #8. They go deep into the confusion that is this mid point of the second arc of Black Science, and go down and dirty with the rainbow of mental and sexual health that is Sex Criminals.

In addition to this, they answer your emails, discuss the news of the week, give some insight into the differences between sober and drunken podcasting, talk about a couple of new titles in "Top of the Stack"; Wytches and Copperhead, and ultimately have a great time going over two of our favorite titles.

31: The Walking Dead #132; Nailbiter #6; Rat Queens #8

We seem to be making a habit of covering three issues a week... and this week is no exception! Under the Comic Covers spends some time discussing The Walking Dead #132: Happiness, Nailbiter #6, and Rat Queens #8. Three great titles... two deep character development issues and one rather shocking and game changing twist.

In addition to these three issues, we answer your emails, and we introduce the title of our new segment that focuses on one new title from each of us every week.

Quick side note... there was a slight problem with Mr. Blahg's audio file, you may hear a slight static sound when listening at high volume, but hopefully this won't detract from your enjoyment of the episode. Rest assured, the problem will be resolved before next week.

After a week off, Under the Comic Covers returns with playing catch up as we cover last weeks release of Manifest Destiny #10, as well as stay current with Chew #43 and Saga #23.

Manifest Destiny finds our intrepid explorers two steps closer to freeing themselves from both the underwater arch and the horrifying giant mosquitos on land... Chew moves one Olive-sized step towards bringing down The Collector... and Saga fleshes out exactly what Hazel meant by her parents spliting up, and the cliffhanger is unbearable.

In addition to these three issues, we answer your emails, feature our final segment of What's Rachael Reading, and introduce our newest segment, (name to be determined) that allows us to discuss one title each that we don't cover on the show.

29: The Walking Dead #131; Locke & Key Vol. 5: Clockworks

Under the Comic Covers returns this week to go over two perennial favorites, The Walking Dead #131, which reunites us with some old favorites while also introducing new characters, and Locke & Key Vol. 5: Clockworks, diving deep into the origin of the keys and answering each and every question posited in the first four volumes.

Before we dig into those issues we have a few bits of news up front, as well as a couple of cool announcements regarding Walker Stalker Con Atlanta, and unfortunately we will not be releasing an episode next week due to Mr. Blahg's vacation.

After all of that goodness we answer some emails and give our (Mr. Blahg's) opinion of various pickles ranging from fried to cornichons... and be sure to stay until the very end to get a brief taste of what Mr. Blahg will be immersed in next week.

28: Nailbiter #5

This week, Under the Comic Covers dives into one title, Joshua Williamson and Mike Henderson's Nailbiter #5. This remarkably creepy and atmospheric book about a town that breeds serial killers and the lovely folk within rounds out it's first arc in stunning and gruesome fashion.

We also answer a few emails and, as always, we check in with our favorite comic virgin and get a report in What's Rachael Reading?.

I'm not quite sure how we did it... but we mananged to wring a surprising amount of levity and joy from this material. Hope you enjoy. Big thanks to those of you who wrote in... not just the ones we read, but also the one we didn't.

27: Black Science #8; Revival #23; Saga #22

We were told it could not be done... we pointed out that we had done it before... but still there were unbelievers.  Tonight we tackle three titles, each as wonderful as the next... each as bad ass, if not more bad ass, than the one that preceded it.  In this episode, Under the Comic Covers dives deep into Black Science #8, Revival #23, and Saga #22 and come out the other end damaged, disturbed, and discombobulated in all the best ways possible.

We also take a departure from out usual format and in an effort to curtail potential spoilers in the Mail Sack, we are now answering emails that pertain to paricular titles within the discussions of those titles.  Does that mean the Mail Sack is gone?  Nope... now it's just spread around a bit more evenly.

In addition to these great titles, and our answering of listener comments, we also take a quick visit with our favorite former comic virgin Rachael in another installment of What's Rachael Reading.

26: Manifest Destiny #9; Other Titles We Read

This week finds Under the Comic Covers deep in the wilds of an untamed mythological version of America that finds our heroes from Christ Dingess' and Matthew Roberts' Manifest Destiny battling between monsters of the river deep and monsters within their very ranks... and as always, we are here to babble on regarding our thoughts.

We also take the opportunity to discuss our top 3, or so, other other titles that we read but don't cover regularly (for now) on the show.

25: The Walking Dead #130; Sex Criminals #7

Things get funky and very, very adult in this episode of Under the Comic Covers.  We start off rather tame with our coverage of The Walking Dead... zombies, new communities, and a baby.  But things take a turn for the blue once we start in with Sex Criminals, so be forewarned, that segment is not for the more innocent listeners we may have... and if that isn't enticing, I don't know what would be.

Now with 69% more porn music than before!

In addition to the debauchery and good times to be found in this episode we also take a deep dive into the UtCC Mail Sack and answer our listener mail as well as another installment of What's Rachael Reading?.

Under the Comic Covers is pleased to present our first movie review, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, with our very special guest, Jason Cabassi of The Walking Dead'Cast.

If you have not seen the film, this episode of the show is not for you... we go into detail about the aspects of this movie that tickle our fancy and will spoil the bejeezus out of you,,, so be forewarned.

Although we don't have any mail to answer, we didn't really announce our plans to record this special episode, we do take a few moments to talk about our thoughts regarding the death of Robin Williams.

This may not be a normal episode of UtCC, but we hope you enjoy it... regardless, we will return later this week to discuss The Walking Dead and Sex Criminals.  Until then, we'll be tucked under the comic covers.

23: Nailbiter #4; Locke & Key Vol. 4: Keys to the Kingdom

We at Under the Comic Covers don't plan on setting up thematic episodes (maybe a little, but not overtly), yet we do it again with another exceptionally creepy pairing of Nailbiter #4 and Locke & Key Vol. 4: Keys to the Kingdom.

Nailbiter continues it's fantastic first arc by answering a few questions and asking quite a few more, all while leaving us in the dark in terms of who the real new serial killer is...

Meanwhile, Locke & Key delivers yet another incredible chapter in what is one of our favorite completed series.  Events come to a head as things boil down to genuine life or death situations, and what is left behind leaves much to anticipate as we come closer to the end.

As always we answer your email and questions... although sadly, this week we only had one fantabulous email... but make sure to get your emails in quickly next week... we will be covering The Walking Dead and Rat Queens... so we expect more from you... send in those emails!

Chapters

  1. Intro    (0:00)

22: Black Science #7; Nowhere Men Vol. 1

Under the Comic Covers is proud to present another perfect pairing this week... We bring you the science suite of Rick Remender's Black Science and Eric Stephenson's troubled masterpiece, Nowhere Men.

Black Science kicks off it's second arc with something akin to a runaway freight train... pure adrenaline and pure action as we, the readers, find ourselves questioning everything we know about who are heroes and who are villains really are.

Nowhere Men, a book that emerged a rising star last year, only to see it's shine diminish due to delays and rumors, is but a six issue glimpse into genius... but we can't resist going over our favorite moments and our thoughts on this remarkable work of art.

In addition to this, we dip into the mail sack and answer your emails as well as take another call from our favorite comic book virgin, Rachael.

Read Nate Bellegarde's remarkable and touching open letter to readers regarding the delays of Nowhere Men and his role here.

This week, Under the Comic Covers goes over three issues in one episode for the first time, and surprisingly, it's one of the shortest episodes to date.

First we go into the mysteries of Revival #21 and join Dana into her sojourn into the big city... we then travel with Tony Chu under the sea and meet up with Colby and some old friends in the midst of the strangest wedding reception of all time with Chew #42... and finally we wrap up with our perennial favorite, Saga.  If there is a more beautiful way to break our hearts, I'd be hard pressed to find it.

In addition to all these great Image titles, we also respond to your emails and voicemails.

Sex Criminals, Time Magazine's comic of the year and one of Under the Comic Covers' favorite titles, returns this month with an unexpectedly emotional story before turning things around and leaving us wanting and waiting for more.  Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky don't disappoint as the second arc begins.

But before we talk about Sex Criminals, Mr. Blahg talks at length about his weekend co-moderating panels at Walker Stalker Con Boston.  If you want to skip forward and get to the good stuff... you know, like Sex Criminals... that's ok.  No hard feelings.

Under the Comic Covers returns this week to talk about two of our favorite titles, The Walking Dead and Manifest Destiny.

The Walking Dead #128 gives us a deeper look into the burgeoning new community built after the war and gives us a glimpse into a new internal threat to the relative peace and quiet of Alexandria and their new way of life.  As always, we go over our top 3 for the issue and have a chat about Carl's newfound whittling skills and the importance of stale bread.

After a between-arc hiatus, Chris Dingess' and Matthew Roberts' Manifest Destiny #7 returns in glorious fashion as our intrepid band of explorers continue on their westward journey across the newly acquired chunk of North American real estate and discover all new mythical beasties and critters.  Unfortunately, not all horrible creatures are of the mythical type... some happen to be part of the expedition itself.  Plus, we get a look at Lewis as the au natural skin diver.

Under the Comic Covers delves into new mysteries and newly answered questions in our coverage of Revival #20, the Image rural noir title by Tim Seely and Mike Norton.  Who is that man at the end, and why is Em jumping with Jesus on the cover?  These are but two of the many questions that we pose.

We also bring ourselves current with Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staple's remarkable series Saga.  Volume 3 is an amazing look at relationships both new and old and sets the stage for what will be next to follow... and we will get that return in 2 weeks.  Make sure you are caught up for what will be a most anticipated return.

Plus, we answer your emails and check in with our favorite comic virgin Rachael in this week's installment of "What is Rachael Reading?"

Things get strange as Under the Comic Covers welcomes two new Image titles to the rotation... John Layman and Rob Guillory's Chew and Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera's Black Science.  One title serves up heaping plates of absurdist humor, while the other breaks through the barriers of interdimensional travel and delivers a story chock full of action and forward momentum.

Mr. Blahg and Grace welcome new listeners and give a brief rundown of how we structure the show before going over the comic news of the week.  Plus, we answer your emails and check in with our favorite comic virgin Rachael in this week's installment of "What is Rachael Reading?"

Under the Comic Covers is tremendously pleased to welcome Jason from The Walking Dead'Cast as he, Grace, and Mr. Blahg take on the final installment of All Out War.  Did it live up to all of our hopes and expectations?  Did we all agree on whether or not it was unsatifying, or did we think it represents a bold new direction for the comic?  Only one way to find out.

We also begin plumbing the emotional depths of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's hauntingly beautiful series from IDW, Locke & Key.  We dive into the first of six volumes and embark on what will be an incredible journey into Keyhouse and the secrets within.  Do you like mysteries?   Then Locke & Key is exactly what you are looking for.

Plus, we answer your emails and voicemails, in addition to continuing our segment of "What is Rachael Reading?"

Mr. Blahg and Grace return to Brian K. Vaughan's Saga and go over each of our favorite moments from this extraordinary story as we continue with Volume 2.  As is usual for covering this title, we get a little adult from time to time... so be forewarned.  This is an incredible book and we thoroughly enjoyed digging into our heroes' pasts and the shocking cliffhanger of an ending.  From Barr to Fard to Klara to Gwen, Volume 2 is the most engrossing chapter yet.

We are also extremely pleased to share our interview with Mathew Roberts, artist for Manifest Destiny.  It will come as no surprise to our listeners to know that we adore this book, and it is Matt's art that push it from being a good book towards being a remarkable one, and we were honored and tickled pink that he took the time to chat about his start in comics, his process in creating the incredible images of Manifest Destiny, and we thank his patience in dealing with two fans sitting around gushing about his work.

6: The Walking Dead #125; Manifest Destiny #6

Under the Comic Covers dives into The Walking Dead #125, the penultimate episode of the amazing 12 issue arc, All Out War.  What do you think is going to happen now that the final die has been cast?  Listen now to hear our thoughts on that shocking final panel.

We also return to the eighteenth century with Manifest Destiny #6 as we continue exploring the wilds of an untamed America in Chris Dingess and Matthew Roberts' fantastic tale of American monsters and legend.

Plus, we announce the winner of a copy of Revival #19, The Walking Dead homage variant cover edition.  And if that weren't enough, we answer a bevy of email and respond to our first two voicemail messages.

4: The Walking Dead #124

This week, The Walking Dead returns with issue #124, the tenth chapter of All Out War... and Grace and Mr. Blahg are here to eviscerate every detail. As this arc comes to a close, we still don't know who will live and who will die, and there are a few characters not doing so well.  Who will win in this incredible battle of wills?  Will Negan triumph, or will our hero Rick pull through and keep his people safe?  Only two more issues left.

We also digest as many letters as we can, and talk about a few of the titles we each have on our pull lists that we aren't currently discussing on the podcast.

3: Saga, Vol. 1; Sex Criminals, Vol.1

Mr. Blahg and Grace go down on and get dirty with two of Image Comics' hottest titles, Saga, Volume 1 and Sex Criminals Volume 1 (actually, issues #1-5, the official volume hasn't been released yet... pretend it has and hear it here first).

They cover the first six issues of Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples' amazing sci-fi/fantasy love story and have a great deal of fun diving into the nitty gritty about what makes this series so incredible.

Then they thrust hard into the first five issues of Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky's phenominal new series, Sex Criminals.  Listeners beware, things get a bit blue... but for those less prudish, this episode delivers some of the more shocking moments yet for Under the Comic Covers.

2: The Walking Dead, Issue #123; Manifest Destiny, Issue #5

Mr. Blahg and Grace return to their favorite title with The Walking Dead, Issue #123 and dive into unknown territories as they begin coverage of Image Comics' Manifest Destiny, from Chris Dingess and illustrated by Matthew Roberts.

This week's episode digs deep into chapter 9 of the 12 part arc, All Out War, of The Walking Dead and asks the big question... was the bolt infected?  Listen to hear our thoughts.

Lewis and Clark continue to battle the unknown supernatural forces surrounding them, in Manifest Destiny #5, only to eventually find themselves surrounded by those very forces.
