Under the Comic Covers continues coverage of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's award winning series, Y: The Last Man. This week we go over Volume 5: Blade of Truth. After our less than enthused reaction to Volume 4, it is great to be back on track and very excited to see where the adventure takes us next. Chapters

This week, Under the Comic Covers dips its toes into a little bit of horror, a smidgen of mystical smidgens, and a whole lots of weird sexy stuff. First we discuss Manifest Destiny #17, possibly the most intense and visceral issue of the series thus far. Then we join Rat Queens #12 as they contiune on their quest (we think it's to see Hannah's father, but we kinda get confused a bit). Finally, Sex Criminals #12 picks up where we left off... and I can't really say much more than that regarding this particularly odd and sexually adventurous issue of our favorite odd and sexually adventurous book. Mr. Blahg chooses the new Rick Remender and Sean Murphy book from Image Comics, Tokyo Ghost as his Top of the Stack selection; and as always, we answer your emails. Chapters

This week, Under the Comic Covers streamlines this episode in discussing The Walking Dead #145: Blood For Blood. Due to Mr. B's vacation plans, we don't answer any letters, don't cover any news, don't offer up any new titles in Top of the Stack, and we don't even deliver our usual top 3 for the issue... instead, we announce the winner of our latest contest to win a signed copy of the variant cover of CHEW #50 and have a simple discussion of what is a very somber, yet spectacular, issue of one of our favorite titles. We hope you enjoy, and we will return to our regular ol' routine next week. Aloha! Chapters

In our Top of the Stack segment, Mr. Blahg discovers a surprise book thanks to a suggestion from the staff at Blue Moon Comics in San Rafael, CA (shameless plug). He brings Boom Studio's Arcadia by Alex Paknadel and Eric Scott Pfeiffer to the attention of Grace and our listeners. Like a spring meadow in bloom, so was the comic shop this week. With vernal abundance, the comic gods smiled kindly on us as Under the Comic Covers reaps the benefit of four issues to cover this week in addition to two we discuss in Top of the Stack. The Walking Dead #139: From the Edge of the World starts us off with the first issue of the new arc, reintroducing a couple of old friends and seeing another integrate into another community of sorts. We then move on to They're Not Like Us #4: Dreams of Children, a deeper look into this less-than-perfect assemblage of hipsters with powers. Wayward #6 is up next, our first regular monthly coverage of this mythology laden look at Japanese culture and a remarkable story within. If you haven't caught up with Wayward, the first volume is out now, and more than worth the cost. Finally, we return to our old pal Chew #47. In a wildly funny, yet somehow, deadly serious issue of Chew, Tony discovers some hidden talents in his new partner, and an old foe rears his head once again. That really should be enough... but no. We also added in our two respective cents in our Top of the Stack. Grace picks The Private Eye from Panel Syndicate, written by Brian K. Vaughan and art by Marcos Martin. Mr. Blahg goes with The Surface, an Image Comics title from Ales Kot and Langdon Foss. Did we stop there? No, of course not... we also answer your mail, and announce the winner of a signed copy of The Empty #1 by Jimmie Robinson. Chapters

In a situation most rare, Under the Comic Covers finds itself with not one, not two, nay... not even three titles to choose from this week. Instead, we have none!! In light of this strange week we decided to continue with our coverage of Jeff Lemire's apocalyptic tale filled with sadness, and joy, and sorrow, and love... Sweet Tooth, Vol 5: Unnatural Habitats, from Vertigo Comics. Although this is a limited episode, we do answer one letter... but alas, we feature no Top of the Stack. Look for our interview with Charlie Adlard, artist for The Walking Dead, in a few days, plus our episode next week will be covering Chew #47, They're Not Like Us #4, The Walking Dead #139, and Wayward #6. Now that's a BIG week. Chapters

This week, Under the Comic Covers is about one comic and one comic only (not counting the three different comics we discuss in Top of the Stack, which really makes this a four comic issue, but not really because we only do a top three on The Walking Dead and only one of the other three are actually part of Top of the Stack because Mr. Blahg decided to throw in another book because... uhhhh... I don't know), The Walking Dead #138: Confrontation. This issue of The Walking Dead gives us ample opportunity to take our time and really go over every detail, to think about actions and consequences, and we spend plenty of time going over the issue. Our Top of the Stack picks are diverse as can be... Mr. Blahg goes with a new Dark Horse comic, Never Boy by Shaun Simon and Tyler Jenkins (and manages to slilp in a pitch for David Lapham's recent Stray Bullets series, Killers and Sunshine and Roses), while Grace tackles the sweet levity of Image Comic's Oddly Normal by Otis Frampton. This week, Under the Comic Covers breaks new ground as we cover four of our favorite books in one single episode! First, we dig into Saga #26, followed closely by Black Science #12 with a remarkablly strong story propelling the narrative further than expected. From the Eververse, we travel to Wausau, WI with Revival #28 and finish our regular coverage within the magical land of Palisade, home to Rat Queens #9. As if that weren't enough, we answer your letters and take some time in our Top of the Stack segment to laud the new Image Comics' book from Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen, Descender. Chapters

Happy birthday to us!! This week, Under the Comic Covers turns one, and to celebrate we discuss Eric Stephenon and Simon Gane's They're Not Like Us #3, and take a bite our of John Layman and Rob Guillory's tasty confection, Chew #46. We also are pleased to share our interview with Jay Faeber, author of Copperhead, Graveyard Shift, Secret Identities, and many other titles. As you can imagine, this is just the tip of the iceberg (that is untrue... the interview and the two books take up the majority of the episode). We also answer your emails, and Grace features Ryan Ferrier and Valentin Ramon's D4ve from IDW in our Top of the Stack Segment. All of this for the low low price of nothing whatsoever. Chapters

This week, Under the Comic Covers returns to the wild frontier with Chris Dingess and Matthew Roberts' Manifest Destiny #13 as they begin a new arc, and introduce a new book to our roster with Jim Zub and Steve Cummings' Wayward, Vol 1: String Theory... and as an added bonus, we share our interview with Jim Zub and get that much more in depth with this fantastic title from Image Comics. As always, we answer your letters, and discuss a couple of new titles in our Top of the Stack segment. Mr. Blahg talks about The Empty by Jimmie Robinson and Grace brings out Secret Identities by Jay Faerber and Brian Joines. Chapters

This week, Under the Comic Covers is happy to discuss two perennial favorites, The Walking Dead #137: A Future Uncertain and Sweet Tooth, Vol 4: Endangered Species. Things get weird in the Hilltop as Carl loses something a bit more precious than his iconic hat, and Gus and Jeppard bond in some very tender moments... so an all around sweet episode, if it weren't for all the weird licking and bear attacks. But other than that... and the murder attempt and infectious disease... these are two very happy and sweet issues from Image Comics. Perfect material to curl up with your loved one on Valentine's Day and prepare to be single the next day. (kidding) Of course, that isn't all there is. We also answer your emails and grab an issue off of the Top of the Stack. This week, Grace chooses Scott McCloud's graphic novel, The Sculptor... and Mr. Blahg goes with Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham's Nameless. Chapters

This week Under the Comic Covers goes over Saga #25, Nailbiter #10 and is very pleased to present an interview with Joshua Williamson, author of Nailbiter, Birthright, and Ghosted. After it's three month hiatus, Saga returns to its constant glory and delivers an emotional kick in the gut... while Nailbiter completes in second arc with an issue so full of action you may very well think this could be the entire arc all at once. And as a very special treat, Joshua Williamson takes some time to discuss his history in comics, what's coming up in Nailbiter, and fills us in on all the details of Birthright that Mr. Blahg is too dense to figure out on his own. In addition to all of that goodness, we answer your emails and go over some of the news of the week. Chapters

This week Under the Comic Covers gleefully returns to covering two old favorites and one new addition to the regular roster. We begin our meal with Revival #27... dark and brooding as all fine rural noirs should be. Next up we delight at the chef's new recipe, Eric Stephenson and Simon Gane's dish of dissatisfaction and violence, They're Not Like Us #2... and titilate your taste buds with a lovely dessert of Sex Criminals #10: Alone Together. Of course, no fine dining experience would be complete without something with which to wash the delectables down... and for that we answer your letters and indulge in our weekly Top of the Stack. This week, we serve Powers by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming and Star Trek Planet of the Apes by Tipton, Tipton, and Scott. Bon appetit! Chapters

This week Under the Comic Covers introduces two new titles... and although we don't bring you current with either, we go over the first volumes of both Jason Aaron and Jason Latour's Southern Bastards: Here Was a Man and Keiron Gillen and Jaime McKelvie's The Wicked + The Divine: The Faust Act. If you have not read either of these titles, run... don't walk... but seriously, run to whatever outlet you choose, but read these books. You will not be disappointed. We don't have any listener mail to respond to this week... we are assuming you were shocked to hear we were covering two different books and simply didn't have the opportunity to catch up on two volumes with such short notice, but we respond to a couple of Facebook responses for The Wicked + The Divine and talk about a new Image Comics #1 in Top of the Stack. This week we discuss Reyn, the new fantasy adventure comic by Kel Symons and Nate Stockman... if you like monster killing action and farmers' daughters with large breasts, then you won't want to miss this book. This week Under the Comic Covers returns to its normally scheduled programming and brings you not one... not two... but three great titles to choose from (or don't make a choice at all and listen to the whole enchilada). First we discuss The Walking Dead #136: Found, where zombies take a back seat to politics and teenagers having a chat... followed by Copperhead #5 with what may be one of the most satisfying ends to an arc... and we wrap things up with a chat about Rat Queens Braga Special #1, where we simply talk about what a joy this book really is. Of course that doesn't mean we've ignored our listener mail... that's still there, and our Top of the Stack spotlights BOOM Studio's Memetic by James Tynion IV & Eryk Donovan and Abstract Studio's SIP Kids by Terry Moore. All that plus so much more for the low low price of absolutely nothing at all! Hope you all enjoy. Chapters

Under the Comic Covers takes a field trip this week as we both attended Image Expo 2015 in the heart of San Francisco and report back to you fresh off the heels of Mr. Blahg kissing the forehead of Chip Zdarsky! We discuss many of the new announcements, our take away from the Expo, and follow all of that excitment with a great discussion of Joshua Williamson and Mike Henderson's Nailbiter #9. Due to the "on the road" nature of this episode we keep things trim with no letters and no Top of the Stack, but things will get back to normal next week. Chapters

Under the Comic Covers would like to wish all of our listeners a very Happy New Year, and with the new year comes a new episode! See that, it should be a happier new year already. This week, we ring in 2015 with what may very well be our favorite issue of Black Science in it's eleven issue run. Revival #26 makes us care a bit for our favorite white trash Sherlock, and in our Top of the Stack segment we discuss the latest book from Eric Stephenson and Simon Gane, They're Not Like Us. I wish I could say we answer some listener mail, but with the holidays and us recording at wonky times... c'est la vie. There is always next week... and we will be here waiting for you in the future. This week, Under the Comic Covers discuss the latest issue of Joshua Williamson and Mike Henderson's always creepy and entertaining Nailbiter and John Layman and Rob Guillory's tragically delicious final issue of Chew's Chicken Tenders arc. Along the way we cover some strange and often tangential topics. In our news segment there are name changes and assault charges, we take a brief look into Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky's Just the Tips, a sexual manual for those so inclined (those being fictional people with more than a few mental issues), a patriotic tribute to one of the comic worlds greatest fallen hero, and in our Top of the Stack segment we (meaning Mr. Blahg) talk at great length about the entire Planet of the Apes franchise as Grace picks Michael Moreci and Dan McDade's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes comic from BOOM Comics, and Mr. Blahg makes a very sober selection with Robbie Morrison and Charlie Adlard's White Death from Image Comics. And of course... as always... we answer your emails and blather on for ages about a whole lot of nothing... but dag nabbit, we do hope you find it to be entertaining. Chapters

What? The Walking Dead?? Squeeeeee!!!! Yes, this week, Under the Comic Covers covers the world's most popular zombie show... however, we talk about that weird picture book version of that story by Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead #134: From Whispers to Screams. We also go over a new addition to the UtCC stable of titles; Copperhead, by Jay Faerber and Scott Godlewski. Described as Deadwood in space, Copperhead lives up to that description with a fantastic first three issues and a pairing of main characters that will win you over in a heartbeat. Per usual, we answer your emails and take a peek at the Tops of our Stacks with an Image First, Drifter, by Ivan Brandon and Nic Klein; as well as give an advance review of Graveyard Shift, by Jay Faerber (Copperhead) and Fran Bueno. Some seriously good stuff crammed into this particular pie hole. Chapters

This week, Under the Comic Covers dissects two of the more gruesome titles we cover. We begin our meal with Nailbiter #7... a wonderful appetizer with frights, a special guest star, and a pinch of humor to whet your appetite. The main course consists of tortillas, chocolate, and pent-up aggression mixed with fierce fighting skills in this months penultimate issue of Chew: Chicken Tenders... Issue #44. As is our wont, we answer our fantabulous listener's emails, listen to a voicemail froma familar voice, get a mighty heap of news, and we can't forget the Top of the Stack. This week we discuss Tooth & Claw #1, the latest Image first by Busiek and Dewey... as well as Snapshot, by Andy Diggle and Jock. Chapters

Vaughan's Saga #24 concludes it's fourth arc in typically stellar fashion. Vaughan book singing in San Francisco, and a special Top of the Stack segment where we both discuss a new Image title, Roche Limit by Michael Moreci and Vic Malhotra. This week, Under the Comic Covers covers... not three!... not two!!... but one whole issue!!! Fortunately, it happens to be one of all all-time favorite titles, Chris Dingess' and Matthew Roberts' fantastic revisioning of Lewis and Clark's expedition into the wilds of an untamed America, Manifest Destiny. In one of the best issues of the current arc thus far, Lewis manages one of the best spur of the moment heroic moments, and we manage to talk around that fact with our usual aplomb. In addition to this title, we cover some weekly news, including a great "man on the street" report from Kirk Manley (http://www.studiokm.com/) with regard to NYCC, and we top it all off with Top of the Stack, our new weekly segment covering new and otherwise interesting reads not covered in our usual lineup of books. This week Under the Cover Comics goes over the fine points of Black Science #9 and Sex Criminals #8. They go deep into the confusion that is this mid point of the second arc of Black Science, and go down and dirty with the rainbow of mental and sexual health that is Sex Criminals. In addition to this, they answer your emails, discuss the news of the week, give some insight into the differences between sober and drunken podcasting, talk about a couple of new titles in "Top of the Stack"; Wytches and Copperhead, and ultimately have a great time going over two of our favorite titles. We seem to be making a habit of covering three issues a week... and this week is no exception! Under the Comic Covers spends some time discussing The Walking Dead #132: Happiness, Nailbiter #6, and Rat Queens #8. Three great titles... two deep character development issues and one rather shocking and game changing twist. In addition to these three issues, we answer your emails, and we introduce the title of our new segment that focuses on one new title from each of us every week. Quick side note... there was a slight problem with Mr. Blahg's audio file, you may hear a slight static sound when listening at high volume, but hopefully this won't detract from your enjoyment of the episode. Rest assured, the problem will be resolved before next week. Chapters

After a week off, Under the Comic Covers returns with playing catch up as we cover last weeks release of Manifest Destiny #10, as well as stay current with Chew #43 and Saga #23. Manifest Destiny finds our intrepid explorers two steps closer to freeing themselves from both the underwater arch and the horrifying giant mosquitos on land... Chew moves one Olive-sized step towards bringing down The Collector... and Saga fleshes out exactly what Hazel meant by her parents spliting up, and the cliffhanger is unbearable. In addition to these three issues, we answer your emails, feature our final segment of What's Rachael Reading, and introduce our newest segment, (name to be determined) that allows us to discuss one title each that we don't cover on the show. It's great to be back and we hope you enjoy the episode. Chapters

Under the Comic Covers returns this week to go over two perennial favorites, The Walking Dead #131, which reunites us with some old favorites while also introducing new characters, and Locke & Key Vol. 5: Clockworks, diving deep into the origin of the keys and answering each and every question posited in the first four volumes. Before we dig into those issues we have a few bits of news up front, as well as a couple of cool announcements regarding Walker Stalker Con Atlanta, and unfortunately we will not be releasing an episode next week due to Mr. Blahg's vacation. After all of that goodness we answer some emails and give our (Mr. Blahg's) opinion of various pickles ranging from fried to cornichons... and be sure to stay until the very end to get a brief taste of what Mr. Blahg will be immersed in next week. This week, Under the Comic Covers dives into one title, Joshua Williamson and Mike Henderson's Nailbiter #5. This remarkably creepy and atmospheric book about a town that breeds serial killers and the lovely folk within rounds out it's first arc in stunning and gruesome fashion. We also answer a few emails and, as always, we check in with our favorite comic virgin and get a report in What's Rachael Reading?. I'm not quite sure how we did it... but we mananged to wring a surprising amount of levity and joy from this material. Hope you enjoy. We were told it could not be done... we pointed out that we had done it before... but still there were unbelievers. Tonight we tackle three titles, each as wonderful as the next... each as bad ass, if not more bad ass, than the one that preceded it. In this episode, Under the Comic Covers dives deep into Black Science #8, Revival #23, and Saga #22 and come out the other end damaged, disturbed, and discombobulated in all the best ways possible. We also take a departure from out usual format and in an effort to curtail potential spoilers in the Mail Sack, we are now answering emails that pertain to paricular titles within the discussions of those titles. Does that mean the Mail Sack is gone? Nope... now it's just spread around a bit more evenly. In addition to these great titles, and our answering of listener comments, we also take a quick visit with our favorite former comic virgin Rachael in another installment of What's Rachael Reading. This week finds Under the Comic Covers deep in the wilds of an untamed mythological version of America that finds our heroes from Christ Dingess' and Matthew Roberts' Manifest Destiny battling between monsters of the river deep and monsters within their very ranks... and as always, we are here to babble on regarding our thoughts. We also take the opportunity to discuss our top 3, or so, other other titles that we read but don't cover regularly (for now) on the show. Things get funky and very, very adult in this episode of Under the Comic Covers. We start off rather tame with our coverage of The Walking Dead... zombies, new communities, and a baby. But things take a turn for the blue once we start in with Sex Criminals, so be forewarned, that segment is not for the more innocent listeners we may have... and if that isn't enticing, I don't know what would be. Now with 69% more porn music than before! In addition to the debauchery and good times to be found in this episode we also take a deep dive into the UtCC Mail Sack and answer our listener mail as well as another installment of What's Rachael Reading?. We at Under the Comic Covers don't plan on setting up thematic episodes (maybe a little, but not overtly), yet we do it again with another exceptionally creepy pairing of Nailbiter #4 and Locke & Key Vol. 4: Keys to the Kingdom. Nailbiter continues it's fantastic first arc by answering a few questions and asking quite a few more, all while leaving us in the dark in terms of who the real new serial killer is... Meanwhile, Locke & Key delivers yet another incredible chapter in what is one of our favorite completed series. Events come to a head as things boil down to genuine life or death situations, and what is left behind leaves much to anticipate as we come closer to the end. As always we answer your email and questions... although sadly, this week we only had one fantabulous email... but make sure to get your emails in quickly next week... we will be covering The Walking Dead and Rat Queens... so we expect more from you... send in those emails! Under the Comic Covers is proud to present another perfect pairing this week... We bring you the science suite of Rick Remender's Black Science and Eric Stephenson's troubled masterpiece, Nowhere Men. Black Science kicks off it's second arc with something akin to a runaway freight train... pure adrenaline and pure action as we, the readers, find ourselves questioning everything we know about who are heroes and who are villains really are. Nowhere Men, a book that emerged a rising star last year, only to see it's shine diminish due to delays and rumors, is but a six issue glimpse into genius... but we can't resist going over our favorite moments and our thoughts on this remarkable work of art. In addition to this, we dip into the mail sack and answer your emails as well as take another call from our favorite comic book virgin, Rachael. Read Nate Bellegarde's remarkable and touching open letter to readers regarding the delays of Nowhere Men and his role here. This week, Under the Comic Covers goes over three issues in one episode for the first time, and surprisingly, it's one of the shortest episodes to date. First we go into the mysteries of Revival #21 and join Dana into her sojourn into the big city... we then travel with Tony Chu under the sea and meet up with Colby and some old friends in the midst of the strangest wedding reception of all time with Chew #42... and finally we wrap up with our perennial favorite, Saga. If there is a more beautiful way to break our hearts, I'd be hard pressed to find it. In addition to all these great Image titles, we also respond to your emails and voicemails. Chapters

Sex Criminals, Time Magazine's comic of the year and one of Under the Comic Covers' favorite titles, returns this month with an unexpectedly emotional story before turning things around and leaving us wanting and waiting for more. Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky don't disappoint as the second arc begins. But before we talk about Sex Criminals, Mr. Blahg talks at length about his weekend co-moderating panels at Walker Stalker Con Boston. If you want to skip forward and get to the good stuff... you know, like Sex Criminals... that's ok. No hard feelings. Chapters

Under the Comic Covers returns this week to talk about two of our favorite titles, The Walking Dead and Manifest Destiny. The Walking Dead #128 gives us a deeper look into the burgeoning new community built after the war and gives us a glimpse into a new internal threat to the relative peace and quiet of Alexandria and their new way of life. As always, we go over our top 3 for the issue and have a chat about Carl's newfound whittling skills and the importance of stale bread. After a between-arc hiatus, Chris Dingess' and Matthew Roberts' Manifest Destiny #7 returns in glorious fashion as our intrepid band of explorers continue on their westward journey across the newly acquired chunk of North American real estate and discover all new mythical beasties and critters. Unfortunately, not all horrible creatures are of the mythical type... some happen to be part of the expedition itself. Plus, we get a look at Lewis as the au natural skin diver. Chapters

Mr. Blahg and Grace return to Brian K. Vaughan's Saga and go over each of our favorite moments from this extraordinary story as we continue with Volume 2. As is usual for covering this title, we get a little adult from time to time... so be forewarned. This is an incredible book and we thoroughly enjoyed digging into our heroes' pasts and the shocking cliffhanger of an ending. From Barr to Fard to Klara to Gwen, Volume 2 is the most engrossing chapter yet. We are also extremely pleased to share our interview with Mathew Roberts, artist for Manifest Destiny. It will come as no surprise to our listeners to know that we adore this book, and it is Matt's art that push it from being a good book towards being a remarkable one, and we were honored and tickled pink that he took the time to chat about his start in comics, his process in creating the incredible images of Manifest Destiny, and we thank his patience in dealing with two fans sitting around gushing about his work. Mr. Blahg and Grace go down on and get dirty with two of Image Comics' hottest titles, Saga, Volume 1 and Sex Criminals Volume 1 (actually, issues #1-5, the official volume hasn't been released yet... pretend it has and hear it here first). Vaughan and Fiona Staples' amazing sci-fi/fantasy love story and have a great deal of fun diving into the nitty gritty about what makes this series so incredible. Then they thrust hard into the first five issues of Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky's phenominal new series, Sex Criminals.
